The Five Habits Of Authentic Living

The publishing industry can be a very demanding world. For authors especially, it can be difficult to juggle work, writing, life, and staying authentic. However, whether you’re penning your next book, answering questions in an interview, or promoting yourself on social media, staying true to yourself is key to attracting – and retaining – your audience. Read this post by guest blogger Bob Olmstead (@RadRealCEO) on the five habits of authentic living that any professional can benefit from learning.

The Search For Authenticity

Business success can demand a very high price and yet, it’s the world you live in. The crazy hours, the unrelenting pressure, it just comes with the territory. And, for the most part, it’s a price you’re willing to pay.

The truth is, you go to the beat of your own drum. Will that ever change? Probably not. There’s just something within you that demands more from life. Unfortunately, there are times when that strong drive of yours can cause problems.

Attempting to gain work-life balance

Typically, it’s your personal life that takes the hit. There never seems to be enough time. Work life balance becomes something you sneak in versus a way of life. Being fully present, near impossible at times.

Basic things like staying in shape, a healthy diet, getting enough rest, can become a challenge. Life and business in the fast lane. It’s a constant balancing act.

It’s the age old battle, which came first, the chicken or the egg? As in, who will get your undivided attention- your business, your family or the person in the mirror? The pace can be hectic.

Some days you win, some days you lose. And those that love you, know this all too well. The thing to realize is, constant chaos means something is broken.

For most of my career, I have lived to over achieve. As a young buck, doing the impossible got me high. The tougher the situation, the more turned on I got. I became known for it, the Golden Boy that could make anything happen.  It was a massive ego boost.

And the better I did the more perks they threw my way. Winning became addictive. The attention, the prestige, the greenbacks, the adrenaline — I couldn’t get enough of it. I got to be Harvey from the TV show “Suits”.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing inherently wrong with the will to win but it can get out of control. When that happened to me, I began to change. My priorities got out of whack. I forgot who I was.

The morale of this story? It’s time to SLOW DOWN. It’s time to stop and take a hard look in the mirror.

Who is that person is staring back at you, that man or woman? It’s far too easy to get lost along the way. Staying in touch with yourself, with the things that matter most, a very important habit to develop.

Life Beyond The Bottom Line

Pushing yourself too hard for too long will cost you. No one is immune. No one is above being human, it’s just not possible. No matter how talented you are, no matter how much money you make, everyone has limits. Even you.

Stress, overwhelm, uncertainty can get the best of anyone, no matter who you are.

Eventually, you have to deal with yourself as a human being. There is more to life, to you as a person than the business you own. To which many of you will immediately respond, “To hell with that, I got stuff to do!”.  Until you truly stop, you’re not paying attention.

Life blows past you in the blink of an eye. Kids grow up. You get older. And, for the most part, things are good. You own a business. Life is full of opportunities. And if you’re like most entrepreneurs, you know how to have a good time.

The vast majority of business owners, around 87%, rate themselves as happy. So what’s the problem? If you’re being honest, not all is roses. There are times when the price of success is far too high.

Most owners rate running a business as three times more stressful than raising kids. That’s a big deal. How do you handle that? Many don’t. Most owners just keep on trucking, regardless of the cost. It doesn’t have to be that way.

Breaking through comfort zones takes courage and hard work. And, of course, you have to admit there’s a problem to begin with. True success is about more than business.

At one point in my life, I was working several big consulting projects while producing and directing my second short film. I was averaging (18) hours a day, seven days a week. It was crazy. But the thing is, I loved every moment of it!

Sure, I felt maxed out but I was living the dream. Life was good!

In truth, my passions were getting the best of me. But hey, I’m invincible, it’s all good! Well, guess what? I eventually collapsed and almost lost my life. I was only in my mid-forties.

The Five Habits Of Authentic Living

  • Habit #1- Own Your Voice
  • Habit #2- Make Bold Choices
  • Habit #3- Rise Above Adversity
  • Habit #4- Take Ownership
  • Habit #5- Make a Difference

Wake-up calls, work-life balance, finding your way in life, they always come back to getting your priorities straight. And getting your priorities straight always comes back to the things that matter most.

Who are you, really? What do you want from life? When push comes to shove, what matters the most? And more importantly, when was the last time you asked these questions?

No worries. If you register your email me with me, you’ll be able to go through my powerhouse (10) week course, “Getting Focused In Life & Business”, that will take you through the process. Not a bad a deal for an email.

Authenticity is about honoring who you are, even when that’s not easy to do. It’s refusing to compromise your truth in any area of life– because to do so would mean living a lie, which leads to unhappiness.

In the coming weeks, I will be taking a deep and soulful look at the (5) Habits and how their potential impact on your life. I will share my own stories of growth, holding nothing back.

I don’t have all the answers nor am I perfect, far from it. But helping fellow lions, it’s kind of my thing. And when I say “lions”, that applies equally to male and female professionals, entrepreneurs, business owners and the like.
